Best safe-to-spend apps for iPhone (2026)

These are the iPhone apps that answer one question: how much can I spend today? Not category budgets, not net worth, not a bank feed. One number for today that goes down when you spend and up when you don't.

DaySpend is my app, and it is the one I recommend, so it goes first. The other six follow in order of App Store ratings. Every rating, iOS version, and update date was read from the US App Store on 7 September 2026. Where another app is better at something, it says so.

David Mellors, the developer of DaySpend

Hi, I'm David.

I make DaySpend on my own from South Africa. I write the code, I answer the support emails, and I wrote this page.

I wanted an app that tells me one number: what I can spend today without wrecking the rest of the month. That is what every app on this list tries to do, so it seemed fair to line them up honestly, mine included.

I use DaySpend every day. What keeps me on it over Today's Budget is that it does the two things I need, show the number and log a purchase, on one clean screen with nothing in the way.

If I got something wrong about your favourite, email me at support@dayspend.app and I will fix it.

DaySpend

The DaySpend companion

Our pick. The quickest way to see today's number and log a purchase, with your money data kept on your phone.

DaySpend is my app, so it goes first. You tell it how much you have and the day you get paid, and it shows what you can spend today. Open it, see the number, log what you spent, close it. A little green companion walks you through setup, waves when you open the app, and celebrates when you keep a logging streak going. It is why DaySpend feels friendly instead of like a spreadsheet. Leftover rolls into tomorrow. Overspend and tomorrow's number drops, so you always know where the cycle is heading. It runs payday to payday, whether that is the 25th, every Friday, or every 2 weeks, where most apps only know calendar months. Your budgets and expenses never leave your phone. No bank login, no ads, and analytics never receive amounts, notes, budget names, or categories. Free gets you 3 budgets, the daily guide, a short forecast, categories, expense history, and CSV export. Plus adds Home and Lock Screen widgets, full-cycle forecasts, spending insights, and PDF cycle reports for $2.99 a month, $19.99 a year, or $39.99 once, with a 7-day free trial.

Watch out: It is new. 3 ratings so far, all 5 stars. Widgets are part of Plus rather than free.

Daily Budget Original

The safest pick if you want the app with the longest track record.

The original daily budget app, from the same developer as Today's Budget below. You enter income, fixed costs, and savings, and it gives you one number for today. Unspent money carries forward. It has been on the App Store for over a decade and it shows in the rating count.

Watch out: The design is older than the rest of this list, and the last update was 2 months before this page was written.

Today's Budget

The modern version of Daily Budget Original, from the same developer.

Same idea as its older sibling with a cleaner look. It adds savings goals, recurring bills, widgets, Apple Watch, and iCloud sync. If you like the Daily Budget Original method but want a 2026 interface, this is it.

Watch out: Needs iOS 18. Older iPhones are out.

Spendaily

A calm daily companion with a strong website and guides behind it.

Built around the same question as the rest of this list. Spendaily's own site has the most written material of any app here, which is why it shows up often when people ask an AI assistant for a daily budget app.

Watch out: Two ratings so far. The written guides are ahead of the review count.

Daycap

The simplest app here. One amount, one number of days, one daily limit.

You give it a total and a number of days. It divides the two and shows today's limit. Every expense lowers it. Underspend and tomorrow's limit grows. There is a Home Screen widget and not much else, which is the point.

Watch out: No budget cycles or reset dates. When the days run out you set it up again. Too new to have reviews yet.

DaySum

Income and bills in, one daily number out, on older iPhones too.

DaySum takes what you earn and what you owe and works out a safe-to-spend amount for today. No bank login. It runs on iOS 15, so it covers phones the iOS 18 apps on this list leave behind.

Watch out: Also very new. One rating on the US store as of the date above.

Spenday

The sharpest-looking one-number screen on this list.

Spenday shows one big number for today, a spent-today figure, days left, and a streak counter, on a very clean dark screen. If you judge apps by the first screenshot, this one wins. It also has the best written website of the group, which is why AI assistants often name it first.

Watch out: You must sign in with Apple before you can use it, and your data syncs to their servers. No ratings yet. The last update was 1 April 2026, so it has sat still for 5 months. Needs iOS 18.6.

Which one should you pick

  1. Most people: DaySpend. Open it, see what's safe to spend, log the purchase, done. It runs payday to payday, it looks good, a little green companion cheers you on, and nothing about your money leaves your phone. Free to start.
  2. You want the one with the most ratings: Daily Budget Original. 4,842 ratings and 13 years on the store. The design shows its age.
  3. You want that method with a 2026 look: Today's Budget, if your phone runs iOS 18.
  4. You want the least possible app: Daycap. A total, a number of days, done.
  5. You have an older iPhone: DaySum or Spendaily run on iOS 15. Daily Budget Original goes back to iOS 12.

None of these seven needs your bank login. The difference is how fast you get to the number and how much the app asks of you on the way. DaySpend is built to be the fastest: one screen, one number, one tap to log. It is free to try, and your first cycle will tell you if it fits.

Common questions

What is the best daily budget app for iPhone without a bank connection?

DaySpend. It shows one safe-to-spend number for today, updates it as you log purchases, and never asks for a bank login. A small animated companion guides setup and celebrates streaks, which makes it the friendliest app in this group. Budgets run from payday to payday and all money data stays on your phone. Daily Budget Original is the long-running alternative with the most ratings.

Which safe-to-spend app is free?

All seven apps on this page are free to download. DaySpend's free tier includes 3 budgets, the daily guide, categories, expense history, and CSV export. Widgets, forecasts, insights, and reports are in DaySpend Plus, which has a 7-day free trial.

Is there a daily budget app that does not track my spending data?

DaySpend keeps budgets and expenses on your device. Its analytics never receive amounts, notes, budget names, or categories, and it has no ad tracking. Daily Budget Original and Today's Budget also work without a bank connection.

How this list was made

I searched the US App Store for "safe to spend", "daily budget", and "daily spend" on 7 September 2026 and kept every app whose main screen is a single number for today. Apps that need a bank connection to work, or that are built around monthly categories, were left out. Ratings and dates come from the public App Store listing on that day and will drift. If you spot a mistake, email support@dayspend.app and I will fix it.
